About the McDonald's Kanga Cup

Welcome to the 2008 McDonald's Kanga Cup International Youth Football Tournament!

The McDonald's Kanga Cup is the most prestigious youth tournament of it's kind to be currently operating within Australia and is, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and one of the biggest tournaments in the world. Winning a McDonald's Kanga Cup is the most coveted prize in Australian youth football. The tournament is open to club, school, association or community based teams that are part of the FFA Football Family. It caters for male and female youth ranging from 10 years to 18 years of age.

The McDonald's Kanga Cup provides an opportunity for participants to meet players from all over Australia as well as international visitors. Past participants have been from Australia, Chinese Taipei, Denmark, England, East Timor, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Italy, New Zealand, People's Republic of China, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, the United States and others. Social and cultural exchange is encouraged between competitors throughout the tournament, with a wide range of social activities available for participants and officials making the tournament a "cultural festival of football".

The McDonald's Kanga Cup is hosted by Capital Football and sanctioned by Football Federation of Australia.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the McDonald's Kanga Cup is "Uniting the Youth of the World through Football". This philosophy lends itself to the ceremonial and social aspects of the tournament. Each competition also has a Fair Play Award given to the team that plays with this spirit. Referees award the points for this after each game and some points are also awarded on the behaviour of the supporters.

When and Where

The 2008 McDonald's Kanga Cup will be played over five days, from 6-11 July. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Sunday 6 July (there are no games on this day).
The McDonald's Kanga Cup is held in Canberra, Australia's capital - an ideal location. The city and surrounding region is packed with things to see and do, and has magnificent sporting facilities.

Entry Details

The McDonald's Kanga Cup entry fee is dependant on where your team comes from. Please click onto the relevant page in the scroll bar. Do note there are many incentives to reduce this fee - related to referee provision, accommodation etc.

To reserve your team's place in the 2008 McDonald's Kanga Cup please complete the Registration Form (available in the 'Forms & Library' page) and forward it along with a cheque or money order deposit (non-refundable) in the amount of AUD$200. This must be made payable to "ACT Football Federation". Upon receipt of entry form and deposit, an Information Pack will be forwarded to the nominated address.

Entries Close - Friday 16th May 2008. No late entries will be accepted.

Matches

All teams play a minimum of four matches in the preliminary rounds, from Monday 7 July through to Friday 11 July. Second phase games (quarters and semis) are played from Wednesday (depending on team nominations). Some finals will take place on Thursday night and the others all on Friday afternoon/evening July 11.

Venues

The McDonald's Kanga Cup is played on grassed outdoor pitches. For the preliminary rounds venues in North Canberra are predominantly used (plus Mawson).

Games under lights will be played at Greenway Enclosed in Tuggeranong, the McKellar Soccer Centre and the AIS Athletics Pitch.

Welcome Kit

Each team participating in the 2008 McDonald's Kanga Cup will receive as part of their team equipment:
• One x Team Kit Bag
• One x Official McDonald's Kanga Cup Match Ball
• Official Tournament Programs (one per player, coach and manager)
• Tournament Match Cards
• Kanga Cup Merchandise (one per player, coach and manager)
• Participation Lanyard (one per player, coach and manager)
• Garbage bags and Gloves

Trophies

Trophies are awarded only to the winner in each competition. The McDonald's Kanga Cup Champion will also receive a set of Kanga Cup training bibs.

Each team that participates in a Final is awarded with Kanga Cup medallions (20).

A Fair Play Trophy is awarded to one team in each age group competition. Points (0 to 5) are awarded after each game by the referees for the behaviour of players, officials AND spectators. This is awarded at the Awards BBQ at the Kanga Hub on Friday lunchtime (July 11).

There is also a Player of the Tournament Award for each age group competition, voted on a 3-2-1 basis by the referee at the conclusion of each game. These votes are confidential. A trophy will be presented to the Player of the Tournamet at the Awards BBQ at the Kanga Hub on Friday lunchtime (July 11). Runners up will receive certificates.

Potential winners will be notified prior to the Awards Ceremony at the Awards BBQ. They are expected to attend the Awards BBQ at the Kanga Hub on Friday lunchtime (July 11).

Kanga Cup Merchandise

Kanga Cup sweatshirts, T-shirts, track suits, mini balls, caps, beanies and lots more will be on sale during the tournament at the Kanga Hub at Southwell Park. This will be moved to Greenway Enclosed for the the finals.
