The McDonald’s Kanga Cup is the biggest youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere. 2009 saw 230 teams competing and a record number of referees.
Played in Canberra the McDonald’s Kanga Cup is the biggest youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere with over 200 teams from all around Australia and overseas. Running for a week, the tournament is open to club, school, association or community based teams that are part of the FFA family and caters for male and female youth ranging from 10 to 18 years of age. More than 600 matches are played at eight venues across the National Capital, with referees receiving up to three matches a day. The week also includes a number of off field social events for both players and referees.In 2008 95 local and 51 visiting referees officiated at the Kanga Cup, including referees from New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria as well as international referees from New Zealand.
Refereeing at the Kanga Cup
All currently registered referees between the ages of 15 and 22 are welcome to attend the Kanga Cup.Visiting referees are required to make their own travel arrangements to Canberra for the tournament but during the week all interstate and international referees receive:
- Free accommodation at the “Referee Lodge”
- All meals provided
- Transport to matches and events
- Intensive coaching a inspections
- The chance to attend a variety of social events throughout the week
The Kanga Cup is a great opportunity for referees to further develop their refereeing skills as well as having a lot of fun and make new friends. The week will begin with Kanga Cup Referee Seminar and tournament briefing followed by the Opening Ceremony. During the week you will receive coaching at the grounds around Canberra and be able to participate in the nightly de-brief sessions with the coaches. There will also be many social events including the Kanga Cup Disco, movie night and the famous referee football match.

Referee Mentors
A new initiative for 2009, referee mentor positions are available to currently registered referees between the ages of 18 and 26, for referees hoping to develop their coaching and inspecting skills. Mentors will also assist as welfare officers at the referee accommodation, assist referee venue supervisors and fill gaps in appointments when required.Referee Mentors must have a minimum Referee Level 3 qualification and a Level 3 Inspector qualification. Referees who have previously attended the Kanga Cup do not require a Level 3 Inspector qualification. Referee Mentors will receive free accommodation, meals and transport for the duration of the tournament.
Referee Coaches
All currently registered referee coaches with a minimum Level 3 Inspector Qualification are welcome to attend the Kanga Cup. Referee coaches provide coaching and advice to both local and visiting referees at the tournament as well as assist in the appointment of referees to finals matches, and act as welfare officers at the referee accommodation.Referee Coaches will receive free accommodation, meals and transport for the duration of the tournament.
Referee Staff
A number of referee staff positions are available at the tournament including venue supervisors, bus drivers and welfare officers. Referee staff are not required to be referees but experience in a similar role previously would be an advantage.Referee staff will receive free accommodation, meals and transport for the duration of the tournament.
Registering to attend the Kanga Cup
All currently registered referees meeting the criteria for each position are eligible to attend the Kanga Cup.
To register to attend the Kanga Cup please complete the Referee Application Form or Referee Coach Form or contact the Capital Football Referee Administrator at refadmin@capitalfootball.com.au. Please note that there are limited spaces available at the referee accommodation and not all applications may be accepted so it is recommended that applications are completed as early as possible.
