Five visitors from overseas head an impressive list of entrants for the 21st Kanga Cup to be held in Canberra from July 10-15.

 

PoCheolDomg PS, the junior club to the Pohang Steelers and regular competitors SinGok PS lead the challenge from Korea and they are joined by welcome guests Subang Jaya (Malaysia), Rizal FA (Philippines) and Coastal Spirit (New Zealand) all adding a touch of international flair to proceedings in the nations’ capital.

 

This year there are in excess of 92 different clubs from around Australia taking part in the week-long festivities with every state and territory represented in the competition, with the exception of Western Australia, and the number of entries exceeding the 200 mark as registrations closed on Monday evening. (Official tally of teams as of 2pm on Tuesday 31st May was 228).

 

Already confirmed are competitors representing South Melbourne FC, Doveton FC and Werribee City from Victoria as well as South Australian aces Adelaide City – a regular visitor to this prestigious competition and one usually in the mix come finals time.

 

After being unable to send a team last year, the Northern Territory boasts an entrant in the form of the Mindil Aces, making the long trek from Darwin to pit their wits against the best of the rest.

 

South West Queensland, Football Wide Bay and the Whitsunday Soccer Association, from North of the State, fly the flag for the Sunshine State whilst Tasmania hasn’t been left out as they supply Northern Tasmania, Glenorchy Knights and Tilford Zebras to what should be a scintillating week of football action.

 

Due to their close proximity it will come as no surprise to see a plethora of teams from across New South Wales venturing South with Kanga Cup luminaries Northbridge FC from the Kuringai District, Maroubra United from the Eastern Suburbs, Belmore Hercules from Canterbury District and even Harry Kewell’s old club Fairfield Hotspurs looking forward to the trip whilst Tilligerry FC represent the Newcastle Football Association in the Boy’s under-11.

 

Finally there are, of course, the multitudes from the home state – the ACT. The local challenge is always a strong one at the Kanga Cup with powerhouse club Canberra FC usually to the fore and supplying one of the venues for the Grand Finals to be played on the last day of competition as the magnificent Deakin Stadium is utilised as the plaudits are handed out.

 

With the cast list coming together and final preparations almost in place, the scene is set once again for a week of football and fun as the Kanga Cup kicks off in 2011!
