10.06.09 – McDonalds Kanga Cup to continue despite swine flu

The 2009 McDonald’s Kanga Cup will kick off as scheduled with the Opening Ceremony still scheduled for Sunday, 12th July at the AIS Arena despite the outbreak of H1N1 Influenza (swine flu) around the country.

The largest junior football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere is set to attract more than230 junior football teams from around the country and the world for the week long tournament played across the territory.

Despite the alarming spike in confirmed cases of swine flu, the McDonald’s Kanga Cup Organizing Committee has decided to continue its arrangements for the tournament; however, caution and care will be taken.

“We’re proceeding with the tournament as planned despite the rise in swine flu cases in Australia,” McDonald’s Kanga Cup Organizer Sarah body said.

“We’ve been in regular contact with ACT Health and the Office of the Chief Health Officer over the matter and both parties are satisfied to allow the tournament continue at this stage.”

“We will erect posters regarding the influenza at all venues to ensure everyone involved with the tournament is aware of the strategies to not only stop the spread of swine flu but also alleviate any possibility of an outbreak during the week.”

It’s a good opportunity to remind everyone, including players, coaches, parents and staff of the tournament that personal hygiene is very important in stopping the spread.”

“Everyone should ensure that hands are washed using clean warm water which will be available at all grounds, the use of soap and hand drying facilities.”
